“The odds of going to the store for a loaf of bread and coming out
with only a loaf of bread are three billion to one.”
~ Erma Bombeck
It's magic. no kidding. I had the first 3g one ... four years... loved it but it was getting reeeeally slow and it was time to retire it but when you're poor... you punt,
I then went over to Orange Burgers and bought myself at $10 vegetarian burger with sweet potato fries - iced water with lemon for a grand total $14.96.
I do remember when I was ... mmm .. well? we hadn't moved to the 'city' yet... so it had to be before I was 8. We would beg for Daddy to take us to this place called Zesto's. They had ice cream that came out of a faucet looking thing in a swirl! in a cone! ... AND a sandwich called a hamburger ... you could get cheese on it and if you ordered it in the basket... that meant you got french fried potatoes.
If we got it in the basket, it cost 35¢ ... without 25¢. The cokes were 5¢. This was the most delicious and largest bribe for being good all week. Forget the spankings and such... I mean... this was magic.
AND... when I had my tonsils out? I got milkshakes. I was 8. wow... good stuff...
I remember hearing Daddy coming unglued when we went to see my brother in the service. He was stationed somewhere around Denver ... we ordered a cheeseburger ... we were quite sophisticated at this stuff by now... and it cost 75¢ .... AND we had to put it together.... HAHaaaa
And so now we can discuss gas. There used to be four of us girls who palled palled? that doesn't look right. anyway.. we would get Anne's car and each of us would give a quarter -- we'd buy a dollar's worth of gas and ride around all day long looking for who was where and doing what.... ahhhhhh the 50s... swapping cars at red lights... oh oh !!!! there went ... Ricky and Johnny and Pat and Jimmy! HAaaaa
We'd catch up .. then ignore them. of course... :D
Anyway! from a phone that plugged into the wall that you dialed with a 3' cord that wrapped around yer neck... oh, wow... do I remember when we got a cord that would allow me to drag it into my room from the hallway. That was just about the most luxurious thing until the Princess phones came out and well.... the colors...
We had an attic fan growing up. If you closed the doors to the hallway just right... a most wonderful and delicious breeze came through while lying on the floor with my feet on the wall talking to whoever and listening to new 45s... Brown Eyed Handsome Man - Chuck Berry and Fats Domino and Little Richard and Chubby Checkers and and ... and well... our boy Elvis... and Pat Boone... HAhaaaa.... what a crew the 50s had... doo wop ---- and oh, baruther... Johnny Mathis! man oh man... The Diamonds... Bobby Darin --- uh Little Darlin ... who did that... The Diamonds? I'm sitting here thinking of a zillion artists and songs... we had good stuff in the 50s, y'all! LOVED Alley Oop ooop ... oop oop ... who did that.. Ray Stevens?
Anyway, this door manipulating thing worked great until one's parent(s) exclaimed how HOT it is... the fan not working?! and then I'd hurry and open a door and well...
So... now I have the latest whammo bammo iPhone and I've been syncing and restoring apps and all manner of thises and thats. The compass! the new Maps app! ... oh, man! and Siri? I haven't even gotten that far yet.
So... from bread and milk to an iPhone and various other on sale items - I won't mention because ... for crying out loud! well? I did pass up TWO estate sales on the way to get said bread and milk.
I will die a female. This is a fact - when you see a sign that says 50% off or heaven freaking forbid 75% off??? ... you find me a female that won't investigate... I have bought stuff for 25¢ that ... well? I did make earrings with some stuff... that's really fun.
I'm off to bed and playing with m'phone.... a new toy.
They also had lemon pound cake for half price ... bought four. dammit... but the expiration date? is July 2012! I'll take some with me ... am I leaving next week?
I need to move along... all that's left is getting Homer washed and serviced and packed.
sigh

Ha, that pound cake would not last till next week here! I swear, it just somehow dissapears??
ReplyDeleteOh dear, based on the graphic at the top, I must be a guy! I'm not even a guy, because I often come out of the store with even less than I went in for.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. Totally entertaining.
Did you notice that the red line indicating the woman's steps didn't even go into the GAP to buy those shoes? I guess I shop more like a man. But as for your IPhone... now THAT'S something I could get excited about! Have Fun ll with all those aps!
ReplyDeleteThat man vs woman chart is funny. I'm pretty tame as far as clothing stores are concerned but grocery stores is another story. I buy in bulk and watch for the good special. I go for a loaf of bread and I but 4 pound cakes, a bag of icing sugar and a can of fine peanut pieces. # goes in the freezer and I make that pound cakes real sinful by cutting it into squares and rolling them in icing and peanut coating.
ReplyDeletePut me in the path of a thrift store and I'm there with the best of them spying for the little treasures that somebody discarded. I'm glad that I don't have to move because I have an awful pile of little treasures to part with.
I can picture you fanning your fanny while talking on the phone. Hahaha.
You'll be on the road in a few days. Is it sinking in yet?
All the best. JB
Hiya Cyn... I know - I slapped in the freezer as soon as I got home... already finished one! ... well, I did have help - a little .. they are these little one pound pound cakes... so moist and I squeeze a bit of fresh lemon on it and top with blueberries... man oh man
ReplyDeleteWell, Galen? that's unAmerican... as well as unwomany...
ReplyDeleteI never...
Haaaaa
Hi Sharon ;) glad to see you! and that is really Odd that both you and Galen just go fetch something...
ReplyDeletenah... I didn't notice if 'she' went into Gap.... I just recognized the paths.. HAHaaaa
and I am telling you! I am having so much fun with m'new toy...
This is my birthday present to me... I'll be 69 in ... oh, wow... in 18 days... man oh MAN oh man
69
Julia! Haaaa…. ooooo - icing and peanuts… aw jeeez.. I need no help in finding new ways to eat sweets… cream cheese icing? sigh
ReplyDeleteand aw… I love to go into new cities and finding the thrift and resale stores… so much fun… I have bought a lot of old jewelry and remade them into 'new' jewelry! I love some of the old beads, pendants, brooches and such….
fanning my fanny… HAHaaaaa… the attic fans created a wonderful breeze through a cracked door… I really would still prefer cooling that way except now I'm too spoiled to air conditioning… I suppose they're still made…
I hope to be on the road in a few days! I get so antsy then start doing stuff and just get sooooo overwhelmed and then …. I get reminded of why I want/have to leave and it builds a temporary fire until I see the cake and then … well… sigh and sigh
