Happiness is a standing shoe tree

Absolutely stellar sunshiny day ... got outta here and went to my little park by the river. I don't know why I insist upon looking at myself in a magnifying mirror in bright sunlight.  I see my Aunt Maudie Mae in the mirror ... the story goes as told by my Mother that she got one of her breasts caught in the wringer washer.

I barely remember wringer washers so for you younguns out there.... it has rollers... she had big ol boobies... leaned over and got one caught... I forget who it was that disengaged said booby... but it was the talk of family for years... HAhaaaa... she was something else.

Anyhow, I like to have lots of light in my old age to pluck the hairs. What the hell is with this hair growing stuff. My hair on my head is thinning and my chin and THROAT???? hair is growing.

I don't know.... what next. I have one persistent hair that I can't see but I feel it ... drives me insane! So ... I like to tend to this personal grooming in Homer by the river with lots of lights but each time I do ... I've just gotten twelve more hairs and 27 more wrinkles. I don't like it.

I have to have the magnifying mirror because I can't see up close that well anymore because I'm old!

I really hate that.

Sooooo after doing that lovely chore.. and walking about a bit and getting exhausted watching all the joggers, cyclists, basketball, soccer, inline skating... geee that looks fun ... I became exhausted. Decided I'd go eat to get my energy level back up.

Now.. the decision begins. After turning Homer twelve different ways.. I ended up at Zaza's Pizza...

They bake it in a wood burning oven ... I had green and white pizza. Spinach - carmalized onion - goat cheese and roasted mushrooms.... very thin supposedly not bad for you crust... just delicious.

Then decided to walk about the neighborhood a bit ... went to Boulevard Bread and bought two loaves of yesterday's bread at half price. Raspberry almond and chocolate something or other... bites of that delicious kind of burned tasting chocolate and... well...

Decided I'd go to the container store and see what I could find that might work as a clothes hanger to put in Homer when I start my travels. Before, I took my keyboard folding thing ... worked great but then now I want to leave it for my keyboard.

Found the perfect thing!!! A shoe rack! It will fit in the well behind the back smaller seat.

Homer has front seats, middle seats - I took those out - and two back seats that split in two with one half being larger than the other. I leave the smaller seat up leaving a well in back. This shoe tree fits perfectly.

This will allow me to hang my blouses and shirts. I like to carry a bunch of overshirts. I don't like to wear brassieres while traveling --- I don't like to wear brassieres when I'm not traveling! too old but I'm not flat chested and have to have something or I'll scare the kiddies.

So... I wear tight t-shirts with the overblouse or I have several spaghetti strap camisoles with the built in very comfortable bra that I also wear with the overshirts. The baskets will hold my underwear and nightwear. :D

It was such a gorgeous day that I went back to the park and put it together. I drew a crowd. They were trying to not be obvious but they were there. I just went merrily on my way talking to myself and put it together. After I figured out what went where, it went very fast!

Washers always confound me. The bottom had to ... oh, nevermind... I did it. I'm a mechanically challenged kid but I can do stuff.

It fits perfectly! I'm so excited about this. I have had several ways to tote my clothes and such. I want minimal stuff in Homer.

I'm getting a tad excited about leaving. Always anxious and a tad apprehensive. I'm getting older and the gas situation out west. I was sitting in Homer loving the sunset and quite satisfied with my shoe tree... decided I'd do trip plan on my iPhone maps... It's 1800 something miles straight from Little Rock to Big Sur. 1 day and 7 hours it says... ahhhhh

I might bypass Santa Barbara ...and that part of Highway 1 and go straight to Big Sur ... I don't know. Big Sur, Carmel and Monterrey is where I want to spend a lot of time and San Diego. All depends on where I can find a place to stay. I hope to boondock but that area is pretty iffy, I think so. I'm going to have to really watch my pennies.

I very seldom end up with a plan. I like to pick a direction and head that way... then who knows where I'll end up... that's the fun part.

  2. Hi Bargirl….

I like to keep it simple. I don't do cooking and such. When I boondock, it is usually in a Walmart or such kind of place so eating is very available.

I take an electric teapot, a 16' outdoor electric extension cord, a folding table and chair, a pop up foldable screen room - fits under my mattress when folded - one bowl, one plate, one glass, one coffee cup, spoon, fork, knife and a foldable ice chest to be able to camp in a state park or such.

I really don't do remote type camping.

I always carry bottled water … and that's about it other than my clothes and toiletries. Don't need much if you don't cook - like taking a crackpot or a propane stove and such.

and, oh yes… a porta potty is a must… I use the hassock kind with odor leakproof kind of garbage bags which can be disposed at a lot places. I don't like to potty potty in my porta potty… but will in an emergency!

You just have to go on a not too far away trip. See what you wish you had brought and what you wish you hadn't… I keep changing all the time.

I keep taking less and less. You can always go to a Goodwill or Salvation Army type place and pick up some stuff if you decide you need something. Better than taking up space!

I take my laptop, of course and I have an iPhone. I don't have an aircard. I like to go to the various wifi places for heavy duty internet stuff. The iPhone is great.

I put the water in front of the passenger side front seat along with the 'kitchen' stuff I mentioned above. I have the front seat scooted up as far as it can go. I put my maps and kleenex in the passenger side seat. I have two hooks that hang off the headrest things … for my dirty clothes and litter basket… they are two plastic walmart type bags… haaa - I don't let my laundry go too long. I usually wash my undies out and that's the only everyday type stuff.

I put the porta potty behind the passenger side seat. I like to go in and out on the driver's side door -- so will put everything on the passenger side - the chair and folding table fit between the door and the mattress. I have a memory foam twin size that runs from the back to the porta potty - the space between the door and the mattress is enough room to slide these in beside the porta potty… jeez. is that clear?

I have the driver's side in the back of the van as open as possible. I sit in the one back seat left up as I explained in the post and use a lap desk to set my laptop on and will rent a redbox or watch youtube or whatever… do crosswords, etc.

The back of the chair is the well filled with what I posted about… the clothes and such go back there. I also have a 'spa' bag with shampoo and such that I take into the shower with me - one towel and also just one set of sheets and a comforter - pillow.

I have a three tiered plastic tote thing I keep one level with my cosmetics… one with my hair stuff and one with my jewels… ;)

I also have a tote with my moisturizer, disposable tooth brushes and facial wipes. I use baby wipes to do the 'sponge' bath type thing. I have very dry skin and don't shower daily when I'm home… so it feels really good to just bathe with the unscented baby wipes and put on night clothes. I don't do a lot of getting dirty kind of stuff.

I have PJs that are really soft jersey type pants and a night shirt. This is if I need to move or get out or if there is a knock on my door… that's really never happened … I've never been asked to move.

I scout out where I sleep way before I'm ready to sleep. But… I just feel better if I'm in something that is just not flimsy sleepwear…

Let me know if you need clarification on any of this stuff… you can email me - csyp58 at yahoo dot com …

  3. Hi Carolyn, you got me laughing out loud with the story of your aunt Maudie Mae. I can picture it... hahaha. That must have hurt.... Luckily someone was thee to rescue her. Boy she must have been careful to do the laundry after that day.

Now that the wringer washers are gone we still get our boob squish, so not much has changed.

I enjoyed reading about how you pack Homer to travel. You have it down pat to an art.

The sun is shining here to today but the breeze is a bit coolish. It comes off the river.

It's our 46th Wedding Anniversary and I bought a small cake and got Happy 46 Wedding Anniversary in green. My husband is partial to green. Oh well.

I invited him out for supper and he declined as he said that it would be too late after work. He's no fun at all any more.... just getting old too. Hugs. JB

  4. G'afternoon, Julia ;) … I swear I don't know how you have time to visit but I'm so glad you do. Seeing pictures of your bathroom … oh, jeez that's what I need to do but I convinced myself that leaving it and running off is a much better plan. ;)

Aunt Maudie Mae got married at 14 … her family was aghast! aghast, I say. She was the prettiest of all the girls.. seems there were … hmmm four? yes… four girls and four boys…

She had at least 8 children … and ended up being quite poor and worked to death. She and my uncle decided to go to Arizona or New Mexico -- forget - and worked on a reservation -- he as a maintenance .. something or other. He was a mechanic by trade.

They were driving to somewhere on the reservation and he keeled over while driving … she barely saved herself …. they had been married forever. I guess she was well? probably my age… in her middle 60s at least.

She later married a guy who really wanted a nurse. She was such a caretaker and outstanding cook! He died about a year or so later and left her quite wealthy! She had become quite fat and was really dowdy before my uncle died. I reckon she fixed herself back up!

Anyway… her being wealthy now … fetched her a strikingly handsome guy about 5-8 years younger than she… scandal!!!! She brought him to a family reunion ... and oh, baruther... did her sisters jump on THIS! ...

He took advantage of her and well… she ended up dying alone and sad… BUT there for a while she got to play --- went to Hawaii and scuba dived and all manner of stuff… I'm glad she got some playtime… ;)

I couldn't really find the kind of washer I remember … it was more of a stand up kind of gizmo with the rollers… can you imagine having to do laundry for 10-12 people with that kind of apparatus … makes me tired!

FORTY-SIX YEARS … and he didn't even want to … MEN! … come play with me… meet me in Big Sur… c'mon --- bring a quilt or three…

  5. I love you story Carolyn. Always entertaining...

Yeah, I guess we'll be eating left over for supper as I'm not cooking on my 46 Anniversary. Why should I? The fridge is full of left over. There's some seafood chowder, a chicken and vegetable stir fry, some asian noodles. and some beef and vegetable soup.

I'm making a fresh pot of tea and I'm having a piece of the Anniversary cake. He's in one of his negative moods since this morning and it will last about 4 or 5 days and will fizzle off. He gets that way once in a while out of the blue and I kind of just ignore his moods. He gets himself overtired and then has a blowout.

On Monday my carpenter will come back to work on the renovations. The guy is 75 years old bur works well and pays attention to details.

Happy preparations for your travel. hugs. JB

  6. Order him take out pizza and you go someplace and have a nice glass of wine or beer or whatever and go to a movie or concert or take a bubble bath.

I think Joe would --- I don't know what he'd do if I cooked period. Our anniversaries were over about …. hmmm … 2001, I think so. I closed the shop, ran upstairs to change clothes so we could go for a walk and out to eat.

He was on the computer. I said… you're going to just stay here and play your game? Yes… I am… defiantly -- as though … how dare I think any differently.

That was it for me… I was so taken aback and hurt, however, I changed… went for a walk … cried a bit for the loss -- the loss of a dream - the end of our rainbow kinda sadness … I was in the little park … he found me … said … oh, forgot it was our anniversary. I said what made you think of it now? He said … computer alarm… he had it set to remind him… And, well? it was a bit too late because I had been trying to hang on to this marriage for at least 3-4 years at this time.

This came on the heels of a very hurtful other thing he did that I still find difficult to think about much less write about… just so unkind. He left me waiting for him outside the shop … he never came. He went to our son's game without me and didn't even let me know. I missed one of his best games. This was the end of the year tournament and we were the underdogs.

I asked him what the hell? he still doesn't understand why I don't understand that if he hadn't left when he did? he would have been late! Not only did I MISS the game… I hadn't a clue where he was … I hurriedly closed the shop and went outside to wait for him to pick me up as usual.. but this time? no show… unbelievable.

He was mad at me for being upset with him! I told him during one of our 'talks' that if could ever ever understand how hurtful that was to me… we could continue talking … he just doesn't get it.

I'm standing out in the cold … looking and looking and looking … thought he had gone to get gas as he sometimes does … waiting and waiting and fretting because it's getting later and the game was about to start … it was an hour away … did something happen to him? what's going on? … this was before cell phone days.

So after about an hour of waiting then tearing up a bit … saying … no, surely he wouldn't do this to me… I walked to the gas station… nope not there… they hadn't seen him. Our shop was downtown and everything was basically in a little wad…

I overlooked a lot of his crap for my son's sake. Anyway, I told him to get outta my face and I've basically been doing that ever since. That was literally the straw...

We don't have enough good times to outweigh the bad times. Obviously, after your George mellows out … you will have some good times. That makes a difference.

However!!! FOUR OR FIVE DAYS??? holy moly. I'd loan you my tiara but you need one of your own!

Tea and cake sounds good and your stairs are really looking great. You get so many comments on your blog that I don't write much…

You have lots of great pals… ;)

  7. Hi Carolyn, we both ate left over and had tea, and I went upstairs to quilt and he took a nap. I just came down now and he is playing his computer mind games and I asked if he would like a glass of my Gewtraminer and he said yes so I think that he's not feeling as down now. He's under stress and gets frustrated. So we are both at the computer drinking wine. It my last bottle so I better go to WineKitz and get another batch on the go. I give most of it away as gifts. It's such a good wine.

I find that my blogging friends are so very nice and I try to be positive in my comments. Of course we don't all have the same taste but I try to see some positive and that's what I comment on from the heart.
I tend to drop those who don't comment back. I have gotten so much support when I needed it and they are very loyal just like you.

Sorry that Joe was so insensitive to you. Men are quite the mystery sometimes.

Carolyn, I can't help it but every time I see your profile picture in that huge chair, you look so small and helpless, please change that profile picture to assert yourself as queen of the hill. No it's not the wine talking I barely took a sip yet. Hahaha. Hugs. JB

I also have a site that I visit every day called Rug Hooking Daily and I have my own page on there and I participate in discusions and I have over 300 friends on there. It's free and is run by Heidi, a lady I met last year.

  8. computer mind games… HAhaaa…. well, I'm glad you all had a nice evening… 46 years … just wow.

I wish I would get involved with something … I like jewelry making - I had my shop and miss it sometimes --- but not the worry and 900 hours per week…

aw… Joe is just full of these unkind things… it's just who he is… like I say we don't have enough good stuff to outweigh the bad.

No… I'm not helpless, Julia… I don't want to give that impression really…. I'm just unhappy … that picture was taken in the Adirondack's in upper state New York at the museum… it has such a great memory for me. I love it there. It was four years ago.

I'm so damned old and wrinkled that I don't like my picture taken any longer… but I'll try to find something else … the ones in Port Aransas kinda sorta might do… I'm just not used to seeing this old woman… haa?

Hope you have a lovely night… I watched the Oscars… and am about to post and am hoping for another great night's sleep.

I have a fairly high page count - well, for me... I can't believe anyone would be interested in my rantings and ravings but not many comment. I don't mind… I mind if YOU don't post.. HAaaaa… and Gypsy… you two post and I feel everything's ok… for some reason.

My posts are such TMI stuff that it's hard to post on something like that. I read several blogs but don't feel as tough I have anything to say … sometimes I just like to say hi and love looking at their picture of stuff.

    G'night!!! and happy anniversary! … It'll be 28 for me in April…

  9. My grandmother had a wringer washer. it had a wringer on top & a metal type of tub that sloshed the clothes around. I think it was electric. I remember being fascinated by it, but it was in the BASEMENT! I was scared of basements as a kid! They had spiders in them y'know ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Haha Cyn… yes spiders in basements … not good… eww

I couldn't find a picture like the one I remember … it was a stand up kinda thing with the rollers on top of the rub… I really don't remember that much. This was a looooong time ago.

Glad you'll get Ellie back soon!
